The January ice morning nobody in Shreveport practices for

If you woke up to frozen glass and found a crack running across your windshield by the time you reached work, the ice did not do it. The chip did. Cold weather widens damage that was already there, and the fastest way to finish off a chipped windshield in Shreveport is to blast the defroster on high against freezing glass or to lean on a scraper over the chip. Get the chip repaired before the next freeze and the January morning becomes a non-event.

This is not a snow-belt market and there is no point pretending otherwise. The Ark-La-Tex gets an occasional January ice event, one or two mornings that matter, and then it is over. That rarity is exactly the problem.

One or two mornings a year is not enough to build a habit

Drivers in Minnesota own a proper scraper, keep it in the door pocket, and know to start the car and walk away for ten minutes. In Caddo and Bossier parishes, most of us are improvising at 6 a.m. with a credit card, a cup of tap water, and the defroster set to maximum because we are already late.

Every one of those improvisations is worse for glass than the ice itself. The ice is passive. The response is what cracks windshields.

There is a second reason January is rough on glass here. By the time a freeze arrives, your windshield has been collecting damage for months: aggregate off broken parish roads, gravel thrown by sand haulers and log trucks on US-171 through Keithville toward Stonewall, debris kicked up at the bridge expansion joints on the Texas Street and Jimmie Davis crossings. A chip picked up in October sits there all fall doing nothing visible. Then the temperature drops into the twenties and it has somewhere to go.

What the defroster actually does to cold glass

A windshield is two layers of glass with plastic between them. When the outside face is at 25 degrees and you push hot air against the inside face, the inner layer expands while the outer layer has not caught up. That gradient puts the glass under stress.

Intact glass handles it fine. Glass with a chip, a star break, or a short crack has a weak point where that stress concentrates, and the crack takes the path of least resistance straight across your field of view. Summer does the same thing in reverse, when an afternoon thunderstorm cools glass that has been baking at 95 degrees. January just runs the gradient the other direction.

The fix is not complicated. Start the car, set the defroster to low or medium with the temperature dial climbing gradually, and give it several minutes. Use the time to clear your mirrors and side windows. A windshield that warms over five minutes is in far less danger than one that warms in sixty seconds.

Do not pour water on the glass. Warm water on a freezing windshield is the most concentrated thermal shock you can produce at home, and hot water on glass with an existing chip is close to a guaranteed crack. Cold tap water just refreezes and you have made the morning longer.

Scrapers, frozen wipers and the chip you forgot about

A plastic scraper is fine on sound glass. Pressure over a chip is not. The whole point of a scraper is force applied to a small area, and if that area happens to contain a rock strike, you are prying on the damage.

Two practical rules. Know where your chips are before winter, and work around them instead of over them. Never scrape with anything metal, including keys and the edge of a cheap ice pick, because the scratches stay after the ice melts.

Frozen wiper blades cause a related problem. If the blades are iced to the glass and you switch the wipers on before the windshield has warmed, the motor drags the blades across a frozen surface, tears the rubber, and the torn blade then chatters against the glass for the rest of the winter. Lift the blades free by hand first, or leave them off until the ice has released.

Where the metro actually freezes

Ice here is uneven, and where it lands is predictable. Bridge decks and elevated structures lose heat from both sides, so the Texas Street Bridge, the Jimmie Davis Bridge, the flyovers at the I-20 and I-49 interchange, and the overpasses along LA-3132 hold ice after surface streets have cleared. The low, shaded spots near Cross Lake and the bayou crossings out toward Cypress Black Bayou do the same.

Which means the drivers with the most exposure on an ice morning are the commuters covering distance on elevated and rural pavement: LA-3 down from Benton, I-20 west from Haughton and Minden, US-171 north out of the DeSoto Parish end of the market, and anyone running the early shift into the Kings Highway medical district or through the Barksdale gates off Airline Drive and Barksdale Boulevard.

Cracked glass compounds the risk. On a morning when everyone around you is braking harder than they should on a bridge deck, a crack sitting across your line of sight is not just cosmetic. Louisiana's obstructed-view statute, La. R.S. 32:361.1, bars anything on the windshield that reduces the driver's clear view, and an officer can act on a windshield he judges unsafe to see through regardless of how the state handles inspection stickers.

Insurance, and why repair is the cheap move in December

In Louisiana, windshield glass is a comprehensive claim minus your deductible. There is no free-windshield law here, and only an optional full-glass endorsement changes that arithmetic. According to insurance-industry guidance, chip repair often costs less than a comprehensive deductible outright, and many insurers waive the deductible for a repair rather than a replacement. Check your own policy language, because that waiver is policy-dependent.

If you need work done, the shop is your call. La. R.S. 22:1892 prohibits an insurer from requiring you to use a particular glass shop, window glass explicitly included, and requires the insurer to disclose that any network recommendation is optional. Violations carry a fine of up to $500 per offense. Drivers stationed at Barksdale who carry out-of-state policies should confirm directly with their insurer, since the Louisiana statute governs claims adjusted under Louisiana law and not automatically every out-of-state contract.

Short answers on cold-weather glass

Can a chip be repaired when it is freezing out? Resin work wants glass that is dry and reasonably warm, so many shops will want the vehicle in a bay or will warm the area first. Ask when you schedule rather than assuming a mobile visit at dawn will work.

My crack grew overnight. Is that still one claim? Yes, it is the same damage progressing. Report it the way you would any comprehensive glass claim.

Is a crack across the bottom edge safe to leave until spring? Cracks that touch an edge tend to keep running, and spring here brings the March-through-May hail season on top of everything else. Do not carry it.

Does remote start help? It helps if the climate settings were left on low heat. If you left the defroster on maximum, remote start just applies the thermal shock while you are still inside.

If you are looking at a chip now and hoping it holds until March, that is the gamble this article is about. Call for a repair quote or send a photo through the quote form and get it closed out before the next freeze.
